Palin was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska City Council from 1992 to 1996, and the city's mayor from 1996 to 2002. In November 2006 she became the youngest person and the first woman ever elected Governor of Alaska.
In August 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain chose Palin as his running mate in that year's presidential election, making her the second female and the first Alaskan on the national ticket of a major party, as well as the first female vice-presidential nominee of the Republican Party.
On July 3, 2009, Palin announced she would not seek reelection as governor and that she was resigning effective July 26, 2009, eighteen months before the completion of her term.

Governor and Mr. Palin have been asked by the U.S. Department of Justice to testify in its ongoing criminal prosecution in the case of U.S. v Kernell ... The Palins expect to testify in person in Knoxville, Tennessee.
It was an issue for the campaign. If the information I have seen is correct and Mr. Kernell is the author of a certain statement online, it was done for political purposes ... If that's true, it was done for political purposes to find bad information or harmful information. Of course there was nothing like that, but it still was a violation of the governor's privacy. This was her personal email account.
